ABSTRACT
Acne Vulgaris is a polymorphic chronic inflammatory disease of pilo-sebaceous units characterized by comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, cysts, abscesses, and even widespread scarring sometimes. It occurs predominantly on the face and to a lesser extent on the back and chest. Non-inflamed lesions, the comedones, are either open comedones (black heads) or closed comedones (white heads). Inflammatory lesions may be superficial or deep and include papules, pustules and nodules. Mukhadu?hika, having a symptomatic correlation with Acne vulgaris, is one of the most challenging and stubborn skin disorders prevailing since Vaidika era. It affects approximately 80% of the adolescents around the world. Ayurvedic texts have mentioned vitiation of Kapha, Vata and Rakta responsible for disease. As the disease is having a chronic nature, modern medicines only subsides the disease for short time period along with various sideeffects and relapse also occur on withdrawing the medicines. Ayurveda can provide better cure for the disease and treat the root cause of the disease. The sequential administration of Shodhana therapy and certain Shamana yogas are quite beneficial. Ayurvedic medicines are cost effective, easily available and safe for long term use.
