Dr. Saba Afreen* and Dr. Azher Sharif
ABSTRACT
Macrolides are antimicrobial agents that can be used to treat a variety of infections. Allergic reactions tomacrolides occur infrequently but can include minor to severe cutaneous reactions as well as systemic lifethreateningreactions such as anaphylaxis. Although azithromycin is widely prescribed in clinical practice, allergicreactions from this agent have been described. We reported an adult case of allergic reaction associated withazithromycin. The patient initially presented with flu-like symptoms, self-medicated with azithromycin andCheston cold, resulting in significant improvement but the development of facial rashes on day three, indicative ofan allergic reaction. After discontinuing the medications, she was treated with cefixime and Medrol, but the rashpersisted. A subsequent switch to hydroxyzine and continued Medrol led to the rapid resolution of the rash within48 hours, with complete recovery by day three. The patient’s medical history revealed antibiotic sensitivity, complicating the management of her condition.
