*Dr. Abbas Fadhil Shakir Alshalah, Dr. Bashar Abed Mousa, Dr. Muhammed Abed Abdul-Hussein and Dr. Arwa Zuhair Abbas Al-Muttairi

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):- is defined by the presence of kidney damage or decreased kidney function for three or more months, irrespective of the cause. Patients with chronic renal failure undergoing periodic maintenance hemodialysis frequently present with dyslipidemia and this study will show the effect of the frequency and duration of hemodialysis on this dyslipidemia. Patient and mathods: In this (case – control) study which was conducted in the dialysis center of AL-Sader teaching hospital in Al- Najaf city, the lipid abnormalities which occur in those with chronic renal disease who were on maintenance regular hemodialysis had been evaluated. Blood samples were obtained from 50 patients on maintenance hemodialysis treatment for more than 3 monthes with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria and 50 matched controls with no apparent disease and analyzed for serum total cholesterol, low density lipoproteins (LDL)., high density lipoprotein (HDL)and serum triglyceride. Result: there were significant elevation in serum triglyceride and serum high density lipoproteins content of patients on regular maintenance hemodialysis. It was observed in this study that improvements in lipid profile results were achieved with the use of more frequent sessions of hemodialysis per week. It was also observed that the duration being on hemodialysis had no effect on the lipid profile. Conclusion: this study clearly demonstrates that the better the renal function parameters of patients with chronic renal disease is maintained by adequate hemodialysis , the more near normal lipid profile is expected. The lesser of these effective or frequent hemodialysis, the more abnormalities of the lipid profile of these patients.
