Dr. Sameerah Tareq Suhail*, Emad Yassin Mohammed and Dherar Sulaiman Yousif
ABSTRACT
Background: Febrile seizure is a common childhood disorder, age-dependent, and often associated with family history, affecting up to 41% of children and causing simple and complex seizures. Aim: To evaluate the febrile seizure among the children at Mosul city. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Ibn Al-Atheer Teaching Hospital from June to September 2024, involving 6500 children with various diagnoses. 80 children with febrile seizure were included in the study, with permissions from the Research Committee and parents. Data was analyzed using Minitab-19. Results: The age distribution showed that 56.3% were under 18 months, with a significant difference between males and females. Most had normal body weight, with 87.5% having simple seizures and 12.5% having complex ones. Sixty-five percent had febrile seizure for the first time, a significant difference from 35.0% with recurrent seizures. Risk factors included family history of epilepsy, vaccination, iron deficiency, and viral infection. For the recurrence, the study found no significant difference in temperature, but children with less than one hour duration of fever significantly differed from those with more than one hour. Children with less than 15 minutes of fever had 96.4% of attacks, while those with more than 15 minutes had 3.6%. Conclusion: Febrile seizures are more common in males, with risk factors including family history, iron deficiency, and viral infection, and recurrence risk influenced by fever duration and attack duration.
