Abstract

ASSESSMENT OF BACTERIAL PROFILE AND ANTIMICROBIAL SUSCEPTIBILITY STATUS OF CULTURED BODY FLUID. A CASE CONTROL STUDY CONDUCTED AT AL KHANSA'A TEACHING HOSPITAL IN MOSUL

*Omar A. Daham Al Hamdani

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The study aims to show the bacteriological and antibiotic susceptibility baseline for patients who do culture and sensitivity test at Al Khansa'a Teaching Hospital in Mosul between 1st of May 2024 to the end of Augest 2024. Methods: A retrospective cross sectional study, the patients mandatory information were taken from the labrotary. The questionnaire composited from four sections. Section one for demographic data, section two for sample details, section three for bacterial profile and gram stains and section four for culture and sensitivity results. Results: The study included 132 subjects, Median (Interquartile range) age of 8 years (9 months to 30 years), with 80 (58.8%) patients < 14 years (pediatric age group), while the other 56 patients were > 14 years (adult age group). The study shows that gram-negative bacteria were more prevalent (54.8%) compared to gram-positive (45.2%). Among the bacteria identified, E. coli was the most common (35.7%), followed by Staphylococcus epidermidis (28.6%) and Staphylococcus aureus (16.7%). Regarding gram stain results and bacterial growth. The study shows that gram-negative bacteria are more prevalent in urine and gram-positive bacteria are more prevalent in other body samples. Among different body fluid; Levofloxacin showed the highest sensitivity rate, while resistance was most commonly seen with Azithromycin and Sulfamethoxazole. Conclusion and Recommendation: Wisely use of antibiotics is recommended before using antibiotics as a wide variations of bacteria types founded among different body fluid sampling. More studies are needed frequently in order to update the bacterial profile, culture and sensitivity and susceptibilities for different antibiotics.
