A COMPARATIVE CLINICAL STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF SHATAPUSHPADI UPANAHA AND GODHUMADI UPANAHA SWEDA IN JANUSANDHIGATAVATA (OSTEOARTHRITIS)

ABSTRACT
Sandhigatavata is one of the vatavyadhi affecting the sandhi. It is charecterised by Sandhi Shoola, Shotha, Prasarana Aakunchana Pravrutti Vedana. It may be correlated to osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis of knee joint is degenerative joint disease marked by degeneration of articular cartilage and changes in synovial membrane, accompanied by pain and stiffness, joint swelling and joint fluid accumulation. Osteoarthritis is the second commonest musculoskeletal problem in world population (30%). Ayurveda concludes combination of external therapies like Sneha Upanaha, Agnikarma bandhana and Unmardhana in management of Sandhigatavata. Upanaha is a bahyasweda and Sthanikashamanachikitsa. So it relieves Shoolasthabdhata and Dhatukshaya. It was a comparitive clinical study with Shatapushpadi Upanaha choorna and Godhumadi upanaha choorna. Thee drug are having vatahara actions and promotes strength over Asthi and Sandhi. The drugs for the study were taken from Gadanigraha[1] and Charaka Samhita[2] respectively. Prepared medicines applied in Consecutive seven days, externally by following protocol. Under the study twenty patients were selected from each group. Statistical analysis of results are compared.
